Welcome!

Here, in the English Department at the University of Bucharest, we deem ourselves to be in the business of tuning young minds in some of the most respectable English-speaking cultures of the civilized world. Our efforts go mostly to providing alternative mentalities and visions to those of present-day Romania. What and how we teach exemplifies civility and concern, professionalism and industriousness, commitment and responsibility, excellence and ingenuity.

Though practical English courses are an important part of the curriculum, our main thrust is towards philological competence and cultural performance. We believe that in fostering linguistic and literary skills, as well as an ability to critically articulate ideas and interpret discourse we endow our graduates with invaluable assets on the job market, whether they work as educators, translators and interpreters, journalists, editors, personal assistants, media analysts, or copywriters.

English is the beneficial other that helps shape a young and enlightened Romanian identity. By comparing and contrasting the ways of the English-speaking world with their own, our students better themselves and realize the true significance of their cultural difference.
